Three lakes that change color before dawn.
Kelimutu volcano in central Flores has three crater lakes — each a different color, each shifting through years for reasons even geochemists do not fully understand. We design photography-led trips with first light at the rim.

Why visit before sunrise.
The colors
Currently turquoise, dark green, and black — but the colors shift on multi-year cycles tied to volcanic gas chemistry. Photos from 2010 show very different colors from photos taken today.
The light
First light strikes the eastern lake (Tiwu Ata Polo) at around 05:35. The contrast between the still-dark valley below and the illuminated crater rim creates the photo most travelers come for.
The crowd
Day-trippers from Moni village arrive at 06:30. We position you on the rim 04:30 — the early arrival also gives the local Lio guides their best mood for storytelling.
Photography-led trips to the world’s most photographed crater lake.
Most “Kelimutu tours” are 4-hour up-and-down day trips from Moni village. They get you to the rim with the rest of the crowd. We do it differently — pre-dawn arrival, two morning sessions on different days, with light direction explicitly considered for each shoot.
