Sustainability & Community Impact: Our Pledge for a Thriving Flores
Beyond Travel: A Commitment to People and Planet
At Kelimutu Tri-Color Lake Atlas, we believe that our responsibility extends far beyond providing a flawless luxury experience. We are guests in one of the world’s most beautiful and culturally rich landscapes, and we have a profound duty to protect its natural integrity and support the communities who call it home. Sustainability isn’t a department; it’s the guiding principle behind every decision we make, from our operational logistics to our long-term strategy. Our goal is to ensure that the magic of the Kelimutu sunrise can be experienced by generations to come, and that our presence is a net positive for the region.
Environmental Stewardship
We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and actively contributing to conservation efforts in Flores.
- Certified Carbon Neutral Operations: We go beyond simply offsetting. We have partnered with CarbonEthics.co, a respected Indonesian organization, to meticulously calculate the carbon footprint of every guest journey—including flights, ground transport, and accommodations. We then offset 110% of this footprint by investing in their certified blue carbon projects, such as mangrove restoration in Indonesian coastal communities, which sequester carbon far more effectively than terrestrial forests.
- Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy: We have a strict ban on single-use plastics across all our operations. Guests are provided with high-quality, reusable stainless steel water flasks upon arrival. We work exclusively with partners, from hotels to local lunch providers, who share this commitment and have eliminated plastic bottles, straws, and packaging.
- Direct Conservation Funding: A percentage of the revenue from every trip booked is donated directly to the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF). These funds are earmarked for their reforestation and community-based conservation projects specifically within Flores, helping to protect the vital habitats that surround Kelimutu National Park.
- ‘Leave No Trace’ Principle: This is a core tenet of our guide training. Our teams are rigorously trained to ensure that we leave every site exactly as we found it, or better. This includes packing out all waste, staying on designated trails, and educating guests on how to minimize their impact.
Community Empowerment & Economic Linkage
Our mission is to create a tourism model where the economic benefits flow directly to the local communities.
- Hyper-Local Employment: We are proud that over 90% of our on-the-ground team—including our highly-trained guides, professional drivers, and operations coordinators—are from the Ende Regency and the surrounding villages of Moni. We invest in their continuous training and provide stable, well-paying employment. Meet our local leaders on the Our Team page.
- Sourcing from Local Producers: We have a ‘local-first’ procurement policy. The delicious Flores coffee served at sunrise, the traditional snacks, and the ingredients for our gourmet picnics are all sourced directly from local farmers, women-led cooperatives, and small businesses in the Moni valley. This creates a powerful economic multiplier effect.
- Support for Traditional Crafts: We facilitate respectful visits to local villages known for their intricate *Ikat* weaving. We work with community leaders to ensure that artisans are fairly compensated and that these visits are a source of pride and sustainable income, not just a tourist spectacle.
- Community Development Fund: In addition to our conservation donations, we contribute to a community development fund managed by local village elders (*tua adat*) in Moni. This fund supports local needs as determined by the community itself, such as educational supplies for the local school or improvements to community infrastructure.
Our approach to sustainability is holistic and transparent. We believe true luxury is experiencing a destination in a way that enriches both the visitor and the host. It is a journey that you can feel good about, long after you return home. For more on how we select our partners, see Our Methodology.

Imagine the vibrant hues of the Kelimutu sunrise painting the sky, a spectacle made even more profound by the knowledge that your journey actively nurtures the very landscape and communities you encounter. Our dedication to sustainability at Kelimutu Tri-Color Lake Atlas extends beyond abstract commitments; it’s woven into the fabric of every guest experience, ensuring that luxury travel leaves a legacy of positive impact for Flores.
Empowering local communities and preserving heritage
Our profound commitment to the people of Flores manifests in tangible actions that foster economic growth and cultural pride. We believe that true luxury is intertwined with authenticity, and this begins with deeply respecting and investing in the communities that bring this island to life. Over 80% of our dedicated staff are proud local residents, many hailing from villages within a 20-kilometer radius of Kelimutu National Park. Through fair wages, comprehensive training programs, and opportunities for career advancement, we empower individuals and families, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism directly uplift the region. This localized approach not only supports livelihoods but also cultivates an unparalleled level of genuine hospitality, as our team shares their deep knowledge and love for their homeland with every guest.
Beyond employment, we actively participate in preserving Flores’s rich cultural tapestry. We collaborate with local artisans, particularly those practicing the intricate art of ikat weaving, a traditional technique recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. By commissioning their exquisite textiles for our properties and offering guests opportunities to visit workshops, we help sustain this ancient craft and provide a vital income stream for weavers. Furthermore, we support local schools and health initiatives, understanding that the well-being of the community is paramount. Our partnerships extend to providing educational materials, improving facilities, and facilitating access to basic healthcare, contributing to a thriving future for the next generation of Flores islanders.
Sustainable luxury: crafting mindful journeys
At Kelimutu Tri-Color Lake Atlas, the pursuit of luxury is seamlessly integrated with responsible practices, creating an experience that is both indulgent and ethically sound. Our commitment to minimizing environmental impact extends to every facet of our operations, ensuring that the natural beauty surrounding the Kelimutu Tri-Color Lakes remains pristine for generations. We meticulously source our ingredients, prioritizing local, organic produce from Flores farmers and fishermen, reducing our carbon footprint while offering guests an authentic taste of the island’s bounty. This practice not only supports local economies but also guarantees the freshest, most vibrant flavors on your plate.
Our eco-conscious design principles guide everything from our architecture to our daily operations. We have implemented advanced water conservation systems, including rainwater harvesting and efficient filtration, significantly reducing our reliance on groundwater. Waste management is another critical area, where we strive for a zero-waste philosophy by minimizing single-use plastics, composting organic waste, and rigorously recycling. Guests are invited to participate in these efforts, learning about the delicate balance of the ecosystem and how their choices contribute to its preservation. We believe that experiencing the breathtaking Kelimutu sunrise is made even more meaningful when it’s part of a journey designed with profound respect for the planet.
Protecting the unique biodiversity of Flores
Flores is a jewel of biodiversity, home to an extraordinary array of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the island. Our environmental stewardship goes beyond operational efficiency; we are deeply invested in protecting this unique natural heritage. The island boasts over 250 bird species, including the Flores hawk-eagle and the Flores monarch, making it a critical habitat for avian conservation. We actively support local conservation initiatives focused on habitat restoration and the protection of endangered species within Kelimutu National Park and its surrounding buffer zones.
Our commitment includes strategic partnerships with local environmental organizations that conduct vital research and implement reforestation projects. These efforts aim to restore degraded forest areas, combat soil erosion, and enhance the natural resilience of the ecosystem. We also engage in community-based waste management programs in collaboration with villages near the park, tackling plastic pollution that threatens marine and terrestrial environments. By funding and participating in these initiatives, we ensure that the natural wonders that draw visitors to witness the Kelimutu sunrise are safeguarded, allowing the island’s unique ecosystems to flourish undisturbed.
